A Decade of Hits: 106 & Park’s Anniversary

BET’s hit video countdown show 106 & Park turned 10 today, and the network spared no expense to make it a big celebration. Live broadcasts were transmitted from all over the country; of course, Terrance and Rocsi held it down NYC (excuse the Mary J. Blige quote,) former VJ Julissa was with the shows view voted “Livest Fan” at his school UNC Charlotte, N.C., and radio personality/rapper/VJ Big Tigger joined the original co-hosts AJ & Free in LA.

It was really a great production bringing out the stars of yesteryears and today. As musicians came out in each venue, the hosts asked them their favorite memories from the decade of the show. Older artists, like Fabolous, Ashanti, and actor Micheal Ealy thanked the show for providing them with the platform they used to catapult their careers. Both musicians each performed a short medley of their top voted songs from over the years. For more artists who claim 106 and Park as their launching pads, check out BET’s comprehensive list and slideshow Artists We Broke. The list takes claims the likes of Lloyd, SouljaBoy, and Nicki Minaj.

Newer celebs like actress KeKe Palmer, Trey Songz, and Ne-Yo (who also performed) appreciated the show for staying current as they reflected on dreaming of being able to sit on the couch and recalling a few of their favorite performances and moments from the show.

What is a birthday party without a cake? Well Trey Songz, Chris Brown, and Bow Wow made sure they took care of that part, and presented the show with a really nice cake designed like the current 3D logo and cupcakes to be passed to the New York studio audience. Meanwhile, back in LA, a performance from Ice Cube served as the “Throwback Jam” of the day, and appearances from a rather irate Jamie Foxx (He had to be drunk or high….???) and Ray J and Lil’ Zane. I’m sorry Ray J, but Lil’ Zane stole your shine simply because of his “Where the hell have you been?” factor. The lil’ rapper announced he will be releasing a mixtape this month and has a video he will premiering on the countdown show titled “Put It In My Lap.” (The title gets a mean side-eye, but I’ll give it a chance before I pass judgement.)

Now, if any of you were nearly as huge Lil’ Bow Wow fans as I was, then you would know he gave himself the nickname “Mr. 106 & Park” because of his undeniable reign on the show. He still holds to record for most videos to retire from the countdown because fans would not stop voting for them. It would have been a disservice to the anniversary, the shows fans– past and present– and Bow Wow as an entertainer had he not performed. So, the little guy took to the stage and killed. I reverted to the giddy 13 year old screaming at the television back when Bow Wow was the be all, end all in Hip-Hop. He went to take off his shirt, to reveal his 23 year old underdeveloped chest, and a crazed fan nearly knocked him down! It was funny, just because I felt like I was in a time warp.

Like I said before, I enjoyed the special, and I hope it re-airs. Knowing BET, it will. One thing about this network, it has NO problems doing a re-run. Hey, hey, HEY! (Wait, that’s Fat Albert, right?) Whatever…

I always try to include some sort of video in my posts, so here is Chris Brown and his friends showing us how to do the CatDaddy. I’m certain you’ll catch me at some party/club two stepping and dipping in my wheelchair! LOL
