Forever Missed. Never Forgotten.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001 Gone but never forgotten. I can’t believe it’s been nine years since tragedy hit. The music industry, better yet Hip-Hop, lost an angel. August 25, 2001 an R&B singer who many argue was on the way to unbelievable success Aaliyah Dana Haughton perished in a fatal plane crash in the Bahamas. |
I remember how I got the news. My family was on the way to church that Sunday morning and my aunt asked me, “Lauren, have you heard of a singer named…” She couldn’t pronounce her name. I tried to help her, and after going through three names incorrectly, I swallowed and asked, “Aaliyah?” I knew it couldn’t be her. She was just on the couch of the hit Hip-Hop and R&B video countdown show 106 & Park two days earlier talking to hosts AJ and Free about her upcoming self-titled album and how excited she was to shoot her video for the single “Rock the Boat.” My aunt sadly nodded and replied, “Such as sad story.” A sad story indeed.
My friends and I have had several debates, in recent years, about the artists prancing around stages across the nation, whose music is played on radios and iPods around the world, and whether or not they’re worthy of the accolades they receive. There’s no need for me to list them, you can figure it out for yourself. But I’m certain, if Aaliyah had been granted a few more years on this earth, her gifts, talents, natural beauty and spirit would outshine those R&B chicks out today. I even wonder, Would Beyonce be where she is today if Aaliyah was still around? I’ll leave that for you to ponder.
I just couldn’t let this day come and go without paying homage to “Baby Girl,” as her music industry friends called her. This year, her death weighs on me especially different.I am the age she was at the time. 22 years. That’s all she had. Fortunately, she did a lot in that time. Her music lives. Her movies live. She lives forever in our hearts.
This post, is dedicated to the life, music, and legacy of you, Aaliyah.
May you rest in peace.□

Very well written and respectful. She will be forever missed. I remember dressing like her with loose fitting pants and midriff revealing shirts. Nine years of our lives have passed to suddenly, but never will her life be forgotten. R.I.P Aaliyah
