Ever find yourself flipping through the glossy pages of your favorite fashion mag or stalking your style inspo on Instagram ogling the trendy garments on display knowing with all certainty that you’d nail the look too… if only you could afford it?

Well, 27-year-old Nneka Shelton figured out a way to merge her passion for fashion with her knack for spotting a bargain to develop online boutique Privately Sampled.

Privately Sampled, created to bring high end fashion to the closets of young adults who are just entering the workforce, is your online destination to stock up on those stand out pieces for any special occasion. “We just want to offer people gems to put in their closet. You don’t have to buy a whole bunch, but one special thing in your closet is what we want to bring to everyone,” says partner and Fashion Director Danielle Stevenson.

Less than a year ago, Nneka sort of stumbled upon the idea after splurging at a sample sale in Atlanta. “That’s my specialty. I love designer items, but I feel like I’ve accomplished something in life if I got a steal– a huge discount,” says Nneka.

She came back to DC with a ton of items that she didn’t exactly know what to do with, so she decided to sell them to friends. Using Instagram, she set up shop and quickly noticed that her reach had outstretched friends and family. Naturally, she branched out and began gathering inventory via affiliate channels, but still this wasn’t fast enough for her. Nneka paid attention to the climate around her and noticed that pop-up shops are where boutiques were really selling and making quick money and since then things have come full circle.

I asked Nneka what her relationship is with fashion and guessed (correctly, I might add) that she was probably the spoiled girl who had mommy and daddy buying her everything. She confirmed that that was true, but that she never wanted to break the bank. Her and her high school friends would compete– not to see who had the most expensive gear, but who got the hottest items for the cheapest price. “I love to be able to say, ‘You have the same boots as me, but I saved $800,'” Nneka told me.

While she is still working a traditional 9-to-5 job, she is so passionate about Privately Sampled that she wakes up every morning with her business on her mind.

“I’m so happy with millennials and the generation that we are in today. It’s really pushed that we do our own thing. Like, fund your dreams by getting whatever type of job you want that can make whatever you want to do happen, but eventually go after what you really love and what you really want to do. That’s my biggest thing.” – Nneka

She told me that she’s all about making sure people have at least one statement piece in their closet that they can go to and takes pride in offering that to her clientele– especially to the modern urban man.
