I was on TV Talking Valentine’s Day [BOLD TV VLOG]
Today I was featured on a segment on BOLD TV‘s all-new “BOLD Life” talk show. Host Zayna Allen invited me and two other journalists to serve as contributors to the conversation about the day of love, Valentine’s Day.
Maggie Coughlan, Editorial Director of PageSix.com and Tamara Fuentes, Entertainment Editor of Seventeen Magazine offered colorful conversation on subjects like the Amazon Dating prank, (which we all hoped to be real,) asked questions like should a first date be on Valentine’s Day and which romantic movies are our favs.
“When did you first fall in love with Hip-Hop?”
While the other girls selected amazing options like Baz Luhrmann‘s “Romeo & Juliet” or “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before 2,” I had to do it for the culture one time.
My first pick, “Brown Sugar,” stars Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs. The two, Sidney and Dre, grew up together in the same Bronx neighborhood and found their ways to unique careers in music. Dre was radio promo before becoming A&R for a major record label and Sidney was an Entertainment Journalist— just like me! The two remained platonic friends, but everyone around them, including Dre’s fiance-turned-short-lived-wife, could tell that there was more between them. Ultimately, love conquers all and Dre and Sidney end up together after a public declaration on New York’s Power 105.1 on Angie Martinez‘s show. (In 2020, it would’ve been The Breakfast Club, but I’m sleep. LOL)
Naturally the music + journalist piece spoke to me directly as a teen, but also the love story and how it is the perfect metaphor for Dre and Sidney’s love. Two best friends who grew up together, finally fall for each other. I love it! (So mushy. LOL)
I also wanted to pick “Love and Basketball,” but I felt it would be too cliche so instead I opted for one of my FAVORITE Rom-coms, “The Sweetest Thing.” This movie is the ultimate “chick flick,” starring Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate. I went through a phase where anything Diaz was in I had to watch it– old and new. Through this film I became a fan of Applegate, until I realized she was actually Kelly Bundy from 90’s off-beat sitcom “Married with Children.” (Mind blown!)
Anyway, “The Sweetest Thing,” is a story of a woman, Christina Waters (played by Cameron Diaz) who had horrible luck with men. Her best friend Courtney (Christina Applegate) forced her to go out dancing the night of Christina’s most recent breakup and actually led her to the man of her dreams. Only catch is, he’s celebrating his own bachelor party as he’s set to get married the next day. The two girls take a road trip to go to the wedding thinking it’s for his brother when they realize the truth. Through a series of adventures and comedic relief (including a full on musical break) Peter winds up realizing that Christina was his dream girl and the two live happily ever after. “The Sweetest Thing” truly a fun movie whether you’re single or if you watch it with bae.
