Katy Perry Brings out Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz During Super Bowl Halftime Show [VIDEO]
I’ve already been a Katy Perry fan since she told us about the first time she kissed a girl… and liked it. So obviously I was excited to hear that she was this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, but I never anticipated the awesomely random pairing of her special guests.
Not to be overshadowed, Katy Perry set the tone by entering the superdome on a gigantic Liger (we couldn’t agree on which animal it really was, but the lyrics to “Roar” suggest it was a tiger.) She then took us to a trippy, tropical oasis with smiling and dancing palm trees, beach balls and sharks! This scene was my favorite. It made me happy inside as I performed the “Just Dance” routine to “California Gurls.” Then, the unspeakable happened…
The camera quick cut to an empty stage. The roar of electric guitar. Then bam! Lenny Kravitz singing Katy Perry lyrics. This shocker ascended us viewers to a higher plane whether you liked it or not. How epic was that?!
And as if we were worthy of any more of her blessings Katy Perry welcomed to the stage Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott! Look. I lost it. In that very moment I went back to the 9-year-old girl who had just seen Missy’s “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” video for the first time on The Box. I couldn’t stop smiling from all the joy I was feeling, and couldn’t help but sing along.
For three entire songs, we got to bask in the splendor that is Missy. She came out to “Get Ur Freak On,” then transitioned into “Work It” and ended with “Lose Control.” Endless pelvic thrusts and krump attempts the entire time set the scene of the watch party I attended.
The ending of the Pepsi production was quite fitting as Katy Perry: The Fairy Godmother sprinkled her miraculous blessings over the stadium from overhead to “Firework.” I’d assume it was to ensure they could successfully assimilate into society after witnessing such an awe-inspiring performance live.
