10 Kings of R&B to Stream Instead | #MuteRKelly Playlist [VIDEO]
I first came to learn of BJ The Chicago Kid on Kendrick Lamar‘s early work. (Like Section.80 and KL1, early.) With such a unique sound and rich tone, BJ is a standout in R&B right now. Which makes sense considering how the “Turnin’ Me Up” singer got his start.
The Chicago-born vocalist, whose birth name is Bryan James Sledge, grew up in the church as his parents were choir directors. At age 19, BJ moved to Los Angeles and sang backup for Mary Mary. Before teaming up with the TDE crew for bangers like Schoolboy Q’s “Studio”, BJ penned tracks for Dave Hollister, Kindred the Family Soul, Lalah Hathaway and Joe.
Choosing the song to feature by BJ the Chicago Kid was not easy, but the musical break at the end of this track is one of the best in all music history. So Step in the Name of Love to 4 minutes of incredible instrumentation and melodic vocals on a toe-tappin’ tempo.
