The music industry’s top leaders and power players gathered at the Avra Beverly Hills Thursday, February 8, for Billboard’s annual Power 100 event. The official Grammy week celebration was held in conjunction with the unveiling of this year’s Power 100 List and the very first New Power Generation List.
Billboard’s Power 100 List honors the music industry’s most powerful figures for their executive excellence and influential work in an annual ranking. Notably, the percentage of women on the list has doubled since 2017, going from 10 to 20 percent.
Billboard’s inaugural New Power Generation List recognizes a new era of entrepreneurs, executives and disruptors who are rewriting the rules of the music business, some of whom have appeared on previous Power 100 lists and others who are newer power brokers. Billboard looks forward to expanding its recognition of these innovators in years to come.
During the event Neil Portnow, President of The Recording Academy, took the stage to welcome guests and introduced music mogul Clive Davis, who presented the annual Clive Davis Visionary Award to Sony/ATV Music Publishing CEO & Chairman Martin Bandier. He was followed by USC’s Dr. Stacy Smith, who spoke about the lack of inclusion, diversity and gender parity in the music industry, explaining how new initiatives like She Is The Music (SITM), a nonprofit that was established to help increase the number of women working in the global music industry, could help level the playing field, and announcing that her team would share its own research database with SITM to power a new resource for hiring women in music. Hannah Karp, Billboard’s editorial director, was joined onstage by Valence Media’s managing director Deanna Brown, where they announced that Billboard will make a $25K donation to SITM. Brown also presented the Power 100 Executive of the Year Award to Universal Music Group CEO/Chairman Sir Lucian Grainge, who took the opportunity to announce that he will not only match Billboard’s $25K donation towards the SITM Database, but will contribute another $25K to SITM’s mentorship program. Between Sir Lucian Grainge’s $50K donation on behalf of Universal Music Group and Billboard’s $25K donation, the evening brought in a total of $75K in proceeds for the organization.
Also spotted at the distinguished event was 2019 Grammy nominee Tierra Whack, along with Soulja Boy, Pentatonix, and Dinah Jane.
