The 2015 MTV Woodie Awards @ #SXSW Recap [PHOTOS]
The MTVu Woodie Awards, an annual show since 2004 that celebrates artists college students love, crashed SXSW last Friday (March 20th). The festival-award show combo brought out today’s hottest artists like Rae Sremmurd, Action Bronson, Ty Dolla $ign and Raury. Despite the rain there was a great turnout, and people in ponchos filled the pimped out parking lot located in the heart of downtown Austin, Tx.
Host Jack Antonoff kicked off the awards show by pulling out his acoustic guitar to play a cover tribute to past Woodie honorees like Foo Fighters and Drake. There were appearances A$AP Rocky, Zoë Kravitz, Charlemagne and The Fat Jew all to present the award made of wood– pause.
By the way, Rita Ora and Charlie XCX, videoed in to explain the story behind the name of the awards show. Apparently, it’s not exactly a joke about a guy’s excited crotch. Back in the day record labels would award their artists with wooden records, kind of like how we hear of platinum and gold record plaques. #TheMoreYouKnow
Anyway, 2015 Woodie winners were Childish Gambino, Porter Robinson, Years & Years, Taylor Swift and WPTS Radio from the University of Pittsburgh. Fall Out Boy was awarded the distinct honor of the inaugural induction into the Hall of Wood after a kick-ass performance.
Rapper Big Sean was the show’s close-out performance and he got the crowd hype. A live band was backing his DJ, so the electricity was high– both literally and figuratively. He performed his smash single IDFWU twice! I loved the show and we had a really great time trunt up in the rain.
