The Put On: Future Band
Future Band is an eclectic movement of varying sounds fusing together multiple genres including go-go, neo-soul, and hip hop. Comprised of six members that include a scintillating trumpeter, a soulful bassist, a melodic keyboardist, an aggressive drummer while lacing together smooth vocals with a edgy hip hop flow, the DC-based act strives to break down the mold of mere tradition to push a sound that is expressive, outreaching, and truly their own.
The summer of 2010 chronicled their birth in a band room of Howard University. Vocalist James “Poet” Woodert , rapper Ey, & drummer Joel Holmes decided to combine their collective talents and knowledge of music to unite as Future Band, which started the search for additional instrumentalists to join the movement. Performances soon followed as the new act began to gain a hefty fan base through the halls and streets of Howard University. That fan base steadily grew with each booked stage at clubs, lounges, and festivals across Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
The band came together as music majors from different universities along the east coast with one goal in mind: to build a platform in which each member could collectively show off their original material while creating inspiring music. Within one year saw the release of the critically acclaimed summer mixtape #nowplaying @futurebanddc (2011) featuring the songs “Fear” and “Brookland Girl” and it’s follow-up Just Because: The Mixtape (2011). The band’s soulful inflections are equally matched by their riveting and thought-provoking lyrical content. Although the band frequently performs covers of hit songs such as Miguel’s “All I Want Is You” or Frank Ocean’s “Novacane”, original tracks like “Fear” and “Love Journey” ring as a true testament to the knowledge, musicianship, and songwriting of Future Band, something many bands lack today.
The Hip Hop infused, alternative band invokes an aggressive, yet smooth groove reminiscent of Rare Essence and The Roots while boasting the energy and stage presence of Jimi Hendrix. Citing the aforementioned as notable influences to their alternative sounds Future Band will continue to forge their own path and bring people of all walks together through their music. When asked what inspires the band to create music, founder and lead vocalist, James Poet replied,
“Music is a universal language, it has no race or ethnicity attached to it and anyone can like it. All walks of life are listening to the same thing and we have similar experience that many can relate to. Music is our means of expression, there are no boundaries and there is no right or wrong with it. Our music is purposeful and it reflects how we want to portray it. It’s almost like our own language that everyone can understand or relate to in some way.”
