The brand new movie, All Eyez on Me, is in theaters June 16 and hip-hop fans around the world have all eyes on the untold story of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. After the Notorious B.I.G. biopic in 2009, hip hop fans knew it was only a matter of time until we saw the life of another major hip hop legend viewed on movie screens everywhere.

During the early era of Hip-Hop, Tupac was not afraid to go above and beyond the status quo in order to bring a message of worth to the future generations. He was known to be raw, real, and multi-talented. Although his life has been deemed controversial, he is one of the most appreciated rappers in the game who stuck to his truth and shared it with others.

All Eyez on Me is directed by Benny Boom and written by Jeremy Haft & Eddie Gonzalez (“Empire”) and Steven Bagatourian (American Gun). The movie stars Demetrius Shipp Jr., Danai Gurira from “The Walking Dead,” Kat Graham from “The Vampire Diaries,” Dominic Santana from “Love for Sale,” Annie Ilonzeh (“Person of Interest,” “Empire”), Grace Gibson (Black Nativity) and Chris Clarke.

It’s about time producers created a biopic that makes you forget you are watching a movie and not an episode of “Behind The Music.”

The film sheds new light on the events behind the rise and tragic fall of charismatic rapper Tupac Shakur played by Demetrius Shipp Jr. The audience will see how his activist mother, played by Danai Gurira, and close high-school friend Jada Pinkett, played by Kat Graham, inspired Tupac.

Tupac’s career soars and he embarks on an interesting journey during the prime of his life, filled with hit records, film roles, violence, imprisonment, bitter rivalries and a complex relationship with music mogul Suge Knight (Dominic Santana).

In the movie, Tupac tells his story while he is imprisoned in February 1995, yet still becoming the first inmate to score a No. 1 album when “Me Against the World” soars to the top of the charts.

It was interesting to see the journey of Tupac’s mother, from the Black Panther Party to drug addiction and then recovery, as well as his intense relationship with Jada Pinkett and the love he had for his sister. It was moving to see how the women in his life were deeply impacted by his music career as well.

However his friendship with Jada Pinkett stood out the most. Fans might mistake them for being a couple but Tupac expressed in the movie that it was more than that. In the movie he states that they connected on a deeper level, past romance.

Viewers will get to see snippets of Tupac being raised in the Bronx, New York, as well as Baltimore, Maryland and Oakland, California. The movie shows how Tupac confronts police brutality throughout most of his life.

As a child when Tupac’s mother gave him a notebook for Christmas, she said “that’s gonna get you a lot further than a basketball.” Tupac began to write and it was all history from there.

It looks like Shipp lived and breathed the life of Tupac Shakur in order to prepare for his role and boy did it pay off. Shipp looked exactly like Shakur, down to the nose ring, hats and jackets. Shipp was a spitting image of the legendary rapper.

The film moves rather quickly through the life of Tupac but viewers will enjoy hearing songs such as “Change,” “Brenda’s got a baby,” and “I Get Around.” Viewers also get to see how he prepared for his roles in movies such as “Juice” and “Above The Rim.”

This movie is definitely a must see! Not just because it’s been long overdue but because the film also answers a lot of burning questions that Tupac fans have had over the years. Especially in regards to why Tupac was mad at Notorious B.I.G., and how Tupac felt about his natural father.

At times it does feel like the producers threw too much information at you all at once and you need time to process what happens in certain scenes. But Tupac was always hype and he did have the odds stacked against him because of his controversial, but truthful lyrics.

One of the best quotes in the movie is when Tupac tells a reporter, “You have to enter in somebody’s world to lead them out…”

He exposed a world of reality that many weren’t ready to hear about and he was always expressing his thoughts about a “movement” or “power.”

In All Eyez On Me, viewers will finally understand what truly made Tupac, Tupac. In theaters nationwide today!
