Amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Bill Pickett Rodeo Invitational in Fort Worth, Tx. I had the privilege of hosting a brand activation for Crown Royal. The purpose? To shine a spotlight on the incredible talent and resilience within the Black rodeo community and to highlight Crown Royal’s dedication to empowering Black rodeo riders through scholarships and resources.

As I reflect on that memorable day, one particular theme resonates deeply: the connection between Beyoncé’s latest effort in country music and the world of Black rodeo.

The 2024 album entitled “Cowboy Carter” refers to a fascinating and often overlooked figure in American history, James Carter, who gained fame as one of the earliest Black cowboys in the Wild West. While his story may not be as widely recognized as some of his contemporaries, Carter’s life and contributions offer valuable insights into the diversity and complexity of the cowboy era.

“Cowboy Carter” is like shining a big ol’ spotlight on Black cowboys. Most people likely only think of white dudes when they hear “cowboy,” but Black folks were wrangling cattle and riding horses right alongside them. The album and its pictures got people talkin’ about these forgotten heroes.

Think of it like this: maybe you never knew Black cowboys were a thing. Now, thanks to Beyoncé, you do! And that might make you want to learn more about these awesome riders.

In June 2023, I interviewed remarkable horsewomen, Brianna Noble and Keiara Wade, whose stories embody the resilience and passion that define the Black rodeo tradition. Brianna’s activism and equestrian skills made headlines as she rode her horse through the streets of Oakland during the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. Keiara, a solo cowgirl with the Compton Cowboys, defied the odds to become a prominent figure in the rodeo world, inspiring others with her determination and grit.

I am especially proud of my brand partner, Crown Royal’s commitment to empowering Black rodeo riders through scholarships and resources. The brand’s dedication to providing financial assistance and mentorship opportunities reflects a shared vision of fostering talent and creating pathways for success within the rodeo community.

I couldn’t help but feel inspired by their stories. Together, let us continue to honor the legacy of Black rodeo and work towards a future where all riders have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
