BobbyPen’s Artist Spotlight: Producer Tone P [VIDEO]
Tone P. |
I had the pleasure of catching up with The Board Administration‘s producer Tone P.
This native Washingtonian, growing up in the SW quadrant of the city, gained an interest in music in high school joking around in class with his cousin. They mocked Go-Go bands to make their classmates laugh, banging on tables and singing like Tre, lead mic for the band UCB.
Eventually, Tone said, he found himself listening more to the beats of songs than the actual lyrics. His most influential album, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint, changed his outlook on music forever. Tone figured, music could really be an outlet for him and began playing around with music production software.
After being accepted to Elizabeth City State University, his mother wanted him to focus on school, but he made clear his plan to continue to pursue his interest in music. Tone said he missed out on the traditional college experience because he spent every open opportunity in his room “playing with the Fruity Loops.”
Sure enough, his hard work paid off and he joined forces with The Board Administration producing tracks for Black Cobain and Wale, who is also with Rick Ross‘s Maybach Music Group which is on the Warner Brother’s label.
Notably, Tone P made the beats for Wale’s “Pretty Girls,” “Running Rebels” and “Bait” from the album Ambition, which dropped last Tuesday, November 1.
Tone, a self-proclaimed work horse, intends to keep putting in work, building a good reputation for quality until he is one of the most sought after producers in the industry.
