Last Friday, Luke James performed two shows at Live at the Hamilton, the Northwest DC restaurant’s weekly music showcase.

The lower level of the venue is an intimate supper club, with a stage, multi-tier table seating, a full menu and drink specials. The perfect environment for a cozy date or ladies night out. 

The Show

Doors opened about 30 minutes before show time and the line extended two floors. Guests were anxious and so was I. I was curious to see his performance style, but more so nervous to talk to him. I mean, he’s just so fine!

At 6:58 p.m. sharp the announcer asked all guests to silence their cell phones and the lights dimmed. The event series logo transitions into a full moon and a spotlight shone on a lone microphone. The band begins playing a stripped down version of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and Luke James casually walks to center stage and serenades the crowd.

By the third song, the tempo has picked up and Luke is in the crowd getting all the ladies to stand up and dance with him. I was very impressed by his vocals– he has great control and his range is out of this world. He’d float effortlessly from the lower register to high and controlled falsetto, making all the ladies scream from chills. I saw goosebumps on my arms too. While I didn’t know many of the songs from his debut commercial album “Luke James” which released last Tuesday,  nor many of his original mixtape tracks, I feel I got a great sense of his artistry and he was sure to make all fans feel comfortable singing covers of hits like Marvin Gaye‘s old school “Sexual Healing” and new school “Studio” by Schoolboy Q.

The Meet & Greet

After the show I had the chance to sit down with the sexy crooner and pick his brain. When we sat down I admitted to him that I was nervous, and he offered me these soothing words of advice, “You’ve got to use whatever that energy is.” If that didn’t make him even more attractive! Chile, I’m just glad I made it through the piece. He was a pleasure to work with and made me feel very comfortable. We cracked a few jokes and left wanting to listen to everything he’s ever lended his pen or voice too. He started as a background vocalist turned songwriter– he was even in two boy groups before going solo!
