How did you get started, and how did you get to where you are today?

My father passed away when I was just 11 years old. The last gift he gave me was the board game Monopoly. That gift was the start of a journey that I am still on to this very day. He didn’t just leave me a board game, what he left me was far more meaningful, my purpose. My father introduced me to Monopoly, and Monopoly introduced me to real estate, which introduced me to financial freedom. Something that seemed to evade my family for generations. Real Estate introduced me to an alternative way of living via passive streams of income. I bought my first property and became a landlord at the age of 18, and started my journey as a professional real estate investor. The journey surely was tough but was worth it.

I received my Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University where I majored in Political Science and minored in Entrepreneurship. I held several internships which became stepping stones for a successful career to follow. I interned on In Capitol Hill with Congressman Hakeem Jefferies and then went to intern with Senator Cory Booker. While there I closely observed and learned how legislation impacts the Real Estate market.

As soon as I graduated, I joined the biggest real estate company in the world, Greystar. I worked with their team in Hoboken, and my professional experience there gave me enough tools to further my own business. After much hard work and dedication, I quickly elevated to a management position. Soon I realized everything that I was doing for a big-time corporate company like Greystar I could be doing for myself. Soon after another large promotion, I recognized my value and decided it was time to leave and start my own real estate investment firm.

At the ripe age of 23 years old, I quit my six-figure job to venture out and create my own business, KR Home Improvement, LLC. At this point, I was a landlord for five years and a realtor for two. In the first two years of business, I was able to generate over six figures in income flipping houses each year. I have flipped a total of 8 houses so far. As my company settles in its third year of business, we are expanding in the construction industry, servicing the South Jersey area. The construction company has taken off and our main area of expertise is kitchen and bathroom renovations.

Challenges and Obstacles

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of your struggles along the way?

It definitely has not been an smooth road, being a black female contractor . Some of the biggest hurdles I experienced being in a white male dominated industry is finding reliable honest contractors . My projects have been sabotaged, tools have been stolen and property has been damaged due to lack of respect some men have had for me. One time the inspector of our township while he was on our job inspecting our work said “why do you people do this “ then went on to prolong our project for 6 months . I had to email the mayor to get a response It’s been very difficult but yet I still persisted.

What do you do? What are you most proud of? What sets you apart?

I am a Real Estate agent on my way to getting my broker’s license. I handle acquisitions and sales while also acting as a primary point of communication with clients by:

• Helping our clients understand the long-term benefits of upgrading their homes via services provided by our company.
• Providing our clients a cost analysis of the value versus cost of their renovations.

We help our clients understand how much a renovated kitchen and/or bathroom will increase their value with an MLS market report.
