How common is it becoming to see a young person disrespect an elder in a viral video online? From teachers getting their wigs snatched in a classroom to blatant harassment in public places, it seems respect for those who have paved the way is at an all-time low.

This week, online communities have been discussing respect after an old video of Dr. Maya Angelou chastising a teenage “People Are Talking” talk show audience member who addressed her by her first name hit the internet. The #phenomenalwoman poet demanded to be addressed as “MISS” due to her age.

Many agreed with Mother Angelou’s sentiment and couldn’t imagine making the mistake themselves. While other’s felt Dr. Angelou’s response was harsh and counterproductive to bridging the gap.

Initially, I was taken aback by the reaction and felt second-hand embarrassment for the well-intended young woman. Perhaps she really didn’t know any better? Maybe the adults in her life are those people who fight their true age by insisting “Just call me Sharron,” taking offense to the salutation?

However, after watching more of the video posted by The JasmineBrand, Dr. Angelou apologizes for how quickly she snapped back but explained why her title “MISS” was so important to her. It softened my stance and helped me better understand the demand for respect by our seasoned leaders.

Actress Regina Hall adds comic relief for a fun roundtable discussion with the cast of Barbershop 3. This interview was recorded in Washington, D.C. on this day in 2016.
