How did you get started, and how did you get to where you are today?

Jahron “J.Dollaz” Black is a Brooklyn native. Born legally blind, he was dedicated to his music at a young age. His musical influences are Jay-Z, J. Cole, Rick Ross and 9th Wonder. His first release was in 2010 at the age of 15 and he is currently performing locally in New York City. J:Dollaz: “I started out aspiring to become a DJ in the early 2000s because I was inspired by what my uncles were doing at the time. I’ve loved music since I was a kid because there was something about the way an artist told a story over a beat that had so much soul to it and that really caught my ear.

Challenges and Obstacles

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of your struggles along the way?

It definitely has not been a smooth road. As an independent artist, sometimes you find that the music industry tries to take advantage of that. Taking advantage of the artist not having a major backing. It is challenging because as an artist, I self fund my projects from start to finish from recording studio time to production of the project as well as marketing and promotion. That’s why I thank the people who are supportive of the independent artists.

What do you do? What are you most proud of? What sets you apart?

I pride myself off of my penmanship as a writer. I believe that I produce quality music that touches people of all walks of life. Music is a pathway to the soul. I’m known for telling stories that people can relate to that may help them to get through any situation. I believe the main thing that sets me apart from others is my visual impairment and bringing a different life perspective to the table.
