Angela Bassett, Brandy, Ciara oh my! The star power at the 2019 Black Girls Rock! Awards was sure to be on 💯 and I knew I had to look the part. So I called in some reinforcements to help me nail an original Gold Carpet look.

So what am I going to wear?!

I had no idea what I wanted to look like but I knew I wanted to pop! I had recently changed my diet and was mindful of my body’s current state. Thinking back to carpets of the past I had a solid list of do’s and don’t’s by now.

I do like my shoulders. I do not like my arms. I do like my legs. I do not like my tummy.

These are the notes I gave Ariella and Skye, my BGR! stylist team, via text only two days before showtime.

Arielle asked for my measurements. Skye asked my hair inspo and they took the rest from there.

The day of, with just 4 hours before media check-in ends and the carpet is closed, the ladies showed up with suitcases and garment bags full of clothes! It was mind-blowing watching them set up a metal clothing rack in the middle of the living room.

After I took a quick shower, we began to try on looks. Unfortunately, the first two dresses I tried on didn’t fit.

Before I began to feel discouraged because I’m disappointed in the current shape of my body, I reminded myself to be proud that I have begun to take action to make the changes that I want to see. That snapped me right back to reality.

No sooner than I shifted my perspective, the third dress slipped over my booty and was zipped.

“Yes! At least something fits,” I sighed in relief, but this dress really wasn’t my favorite.

We moved on to the next look, a 2-piece crop top, and A-line skirt combo. The top was my favorite because it drops off the shoulder and has such beautiful, feminine lace details. The satin skirt also hit just below the knee for a classy look but pulled in at the waist… a little too much. So much that I couldn’t even zip it.

Bummer.

We were all let down until Ariella remembered that she had another similar skirt. Only this one is much longer and hopefully about a size up.

She was correct and the second skirt fit perfectly! I felt like a princess in this one. I just knew I had found my look for the night, or so I thought.

Skye thumbed through the rest of the clothes on the rack and stoped on a red number. I couldn’t tell if it was a dress or not but I figured why not give the girls one more look.

The PERFECT Look!

Low and behold, this beautiful jumper was the perfect fit and has details that compliment the exact features I wanted to highlight.

The drape of the back cinched my waist, while the low dip in the front gave great cleavage bringing attention to my neck. The sleeves have cutouts to emphasize my shoulders while at the same time camouflage my arms. It was short so I was able to show off my legs.

Best of all, it helped me to step out of my typical go-to: black.

Skye then whipped my hair and added beautiful peals in my braided crown for a little extra flair and a whole lot of compliments, including one from Brandy.

I had so much fun playing dress-up with my glam team Skye Charlie (@the_afropolitan) and Ariella T (@ariellafaith) for my media coverage of the Black Girls Rock! Gold Carpet.

These dolls only had two days to pull together a look that fit the occasion AND me LOL
My look was a hit! Watch the vlog above to see how they did it.

Huge thank you to @fancyfrancois for lending me to your dolls. Teamwork!
