What is an Entertainment Journalist?

Are you a movie buff, obsessed with music or a HUGE fan of Reality TV? If you know more about your favorite artists and performers than you do your neighbors or classmates, Entertainment Journalism might be the field for you.

Entertainment Journalism is defined as any form of journalism that discusses the entertainment business or its products. It pulls the general consumer behind the velvet rope of the industry. (That’s VIP, ya’ll 😉)

Where entertainment journalism differs from the news is pretty straightforward. The purpose of news journalism is to inform, presenting facts and figures on current events and politics. The purpose of entertainment journalism, on the other hand, is to entertain.

Common types of entertainment journalism include TV and Film critics, music journalists, and celebrity coverage.

Celebrity reporting typically focuses on the social and romantic lives of the stars and is seen as strictly entertainment, whereas criticism of popular entertainment mainly answers the question, “is it worth the money?” Therefore the analysis can be more informative for the consumer.

Once upon a time entertainment journalism was restricted to paid professionals usually by newspapers or broadcast networks in major cities. However, as digital platforms continue to shift the media landscape, many amateurs and semi-professionals have been able to make a name for themselves through blogs, podcasts, and other online content.

Of course, you can break into the industry by creating your own blog and experience, but to be a true professional journalist, most companies hire candidates who have internships, writing for a newspaper or magazine and a bachelor’s degree in journalism. If writing isn’t your thing, some entertainment journalists also go into TV as a host or correspondent for shows about celebrities, music or movies.

In the next post, we’ll discuss entertainment journalism jobs. What are they, how to land them, and what they require of you. Stay tuned!
